SANDSCORPIONS ANNUAL PARTY 2009
VALENTINES DAY SWEET HEART THEME
AT LAKESIDE BAR AND GRILL
Yep it will soon be here and just like in the past a great time for all. This year we have set the party on Valentines Day so the theme will be
Sweet Hart Racing. We will be sharing dinner, a taco feed and mini burgers. We will be setting up TV screens all over the place and running any videos we have of our past events so if you have some footage let me know as we want to see them. Bring your pictures as we will also have our scrap books available for every one to check out.
Sandscorpions purchased a new picture printer/scanner and will have it here at this event. If you have any pictures on cd bring them as we will have the ability to print anything you want at a minimal fee, cost of materials you know. Probably a buck a picture. Great way to get a picture of yourself doing something great or maybe stupid that one of our members has and you don't.
We are also planning on setting up our drag lights and having some tricycle and little red wagon drag races. Wagon races will be two person teams, Sweet Hart Her and pusher Sweet Heart Him.. Boy does that sound like fun so get those big wheel tikes and tricycles all tuned up and ready to rumble. Classes will be set up by age groups. The event will start at 4PM on Saturday February 14th and last till Mike runs us out. Remember this is a family event so bring the kids you can also bring a friend or two if you like. The more the merrier. For more info call Rich Archer at 398 2616 or www.sandscorpion.net

Saturday Sand Drags. Time 12:00 noon. We will be showing up at the dunes at 12:00 noon with the race trailer. It will be a great time for all those armatures to get used to the lights and their machines, and a perfect opportunity for those local pros to test and tune theirs. All off road vehicles welcome. . www.sandscorpion.net
Sand Drags change of location
Because of the extreme temperatures (90 deg +) we have decided to have the drag races down at the south end of the lake so the families can cool off at the lake. The location is about1/4 mile from the West enterance to the M.L. Dunes. Same place as pic above.

Labor Day Race Camp 2009. This event is especially fun for the whole family as we all get together for a truly off road camp out. We all get together and travel out to what we call Point No Point just about as far out in the mud flats as you can get. We set our camp on one of the largest sand beaches anywhere about a 7 mile cross country trek from the main road. We set up our race trailer and play music each evening. On Saturday at 12 noon we do mud drags across mother natures own slime pits. On Sunday at 10am we have Australian Pursuit races around Indy a set of ponds that has a trail around them. We place all the racers evenly spaced apart around the course. The starter stands in the center of the course and starts the race. The object is to catch the person ahead of you and if you do he is out. The race who is the farthest along in a certain amount of laps is the winner. We have classes for Bikes, Quads, Rails, 4X4s, 4X2s, even side by side's. Saturday and Sunday afternoon at about 6pm we set up the drag lights and have sand drags on the beach. This year we have changed the main course to Turkey, smoked or deep fried and will be having a group dinner so be sure to bring some type of side dish to share with everyone. We also get together each night at camp with Drum circles, night runs through mud flats, music over the pa system and lots of bench racing.

Tina Quinlivan Memorial Team Mud Bog Races. Where. Moses Lake Sand Dunes, North West end of the mud flats. Follow the Sand Scorpions event signs out the gravel road starting at the west entrance to the dunes. Westlake side entrance to red zone. Out to the mud flats where we have located several different mud holes. We divide the vehicles with winches from the ones without. The vehicles with the winches become the team leaders and draw their team members from a hat with all the other entries in it. Each team has 3 members and each team lines up at a different mud hole. All of the mud holes are joined together with a trail forming a race course. The object is to get your team through your mud hole, race down the trail to the next mud hole. The team that completes the whole course 1st wins. The Mud holes are wide enough to allow for passing if the team ahead of you is stuck in the pit. Normally you will have 5 or 6 pits to complete. Last year event was very tough. www.sandscorpion.net

Grant County Commissioners to hold Open Public Meeting to take public comment on the State ORV Funding Cuts
Ephrata – The Grant County Board of County Commissioners will hold an Open Public Meeting on September 30, 2009 at 10:00 am in the Grant County Commissioners Hearing Room, Courthouse, Ephrata, WA take public comment on the managing and operation of the Moses Lake and Beverly Sand Dunes due to Grant County losing $200,000 in state funding over the next two years. The budget cuts are a result of the WA State Legislature redirecting the Nonhighway and Off-road Vehicle Activities (NOVA) to WA State Parks. This is nearly 10 million dollars of gas tax and ORV license tab money gone, leaving nothing for off-road vehicle recreation for at least the next two years.
Any interested persons may appear regarding these matters.

SUPPORT OUR ORV AREA.
Due to ORV funding cuts by the Washington State Legislature Grant Co Sheriffs Dept who manages our ORV area has lost all thier funding. It is a real possibility that we will be seeing lots of changes in how the M.L. Sand Dunes will be operated. They range from possible closures, curfews, user fees, garbage removal, rest room maintance, even enforcement. This meeting is an informational meeting to try and determin what our needs are and how to finance it. If at all possible please try and attend if not able please send our commissioners your coments via e-mail I have included there addresses below, or call Phone: (509) 754-2011 ext 428

Yellow zone mud flats clean up. The Grant County Sheriffs Dept and the Dept Of Wildlife give us special permission to go back out into the yellow zone for a last chance clean up. As you all know the yellow zone is all ready closed to us for the season but our group is allowed this time to go back out and clean up the area. We start at 12am and go till 4pm so the hunters can still get in there morning and evening hunts. This is a great way to do the right thing for the environment and also lets go for 1 more mud flat run. Each year we haul out several truck loads of trash. . www.sandscorpion.net

Moses Lake Sand Dunes faces possible closure & restrictions.
The Sand Scorpions have always fought to keep our riding areas open to all of us.
The State of Washington has decided to take away all the funds that have been set aside for ORV improvements, operation, maintance, and enforcement and turned it over to the Washington State Parks. This in affect has taken $100.000 each year that would normally go to our managers the Grant Co. Sheriffs Dept.
Working with the ORV Sheriff the Sand Scorpions and other user groups will be forming a committee to help our managers get through thies tough times.
We need your help. We have dedicated a web page to this issue and ask that you go to it and take the web poll. Also on this page are all the latest news articles and info available pertaining to this problem. Just click on the Save Our Sands button.

A small group of about 18 Sand scorpions traveled to Beverly to check out the ATV corn maze.
We were not quite sure what to expect as this is the 1st ever corn maze designed specifically for ATV's, Pit Bikes, and off road bikes.
It covers about 100 acres and takes about 1hr to complete. We spent about 2 hrs in the maze and had a blast.
The maze is a map of the United States and the trails are the borders of all the states. You enter and exit from central Canada, and get to cover all the states some of them several times.
We were concerned at first that we might run into each other but found the visibility through the corn to be very good. A lot of the corn is fairly short so you can see over the top.
We had a mix of Quads, Pit bikes, and Side by Sides. Speeds on the trails were limited as the straight away's were fairly short and most of the turns tight and technical. The trails were the width of about 6 feet so passing was difficult and if you wanted to get past some one you had to find a shorter trail.
That just added to the fun as you would catch yourself going down the same trail 2 or 3 times till you found you way to the next area.
Just outside the corn maze is a small dune area that runs up the side of the Saddle Mountain. We spent another hr playing in this area. The managers were great and the ATV rentals top quality.
We highly recommend you take the hole family as you ride for about 20 min, everyone stops at a wide place in the trail and hang out for a pit stop. Our first stop was in Florida and we had a great view of the Columbia River. The second was somewhere in California with a view of the Vantage Bridge, and the last in Montana just before we left the county to go the dune area.
They gave us a group discount so be sure to mention that you are members of the Sand Scorpions.
